TMG Pacific’s Annual Tournament: Uniting Community to Protect Hawaii’s Reefs from Invasive Fish
TMG Pacific, a Sperber Company, organizes an annual tournament to combat invasive fish species threatening Hawaii’s coral reefs. The event focuses on removing Roi (Peacock Grouper), as shown below, and Ta’ape (Bluestripe Snapper), which harm native fish populations. This tradition, started in 2015 under the company’s former identity RMG, and has continued and grown since TMG Pacific’s establishment.
The tournament involves about 70 participants, including TMG Pacific employees and their families, who fish and dive to help remove the invasive species.
Prizes are awarded for the heaviest catches. The event also includes a potluck lunch, reflecting Hawaii’s cultural traditions, and various team-building activities.
The Roi, introduced to Hawaiian waters in 1956 as a potential food source, has become a significant threat to the local ecosystem. Growing up to 16 inches long and weighing up to five pounds, these invasive fish prey on various native reef fish.
Unaccustomed to the Roi, the native species lack natural defenses against this predator. As a result, Roi have contributed to a notable decline in native fish populations, even in areas where their numbers are actively controlled.
The TMG tournament is more than just a fishing competition; it’s a day of environmental stewardship and community bonding. Participants engage in fishing, diving, and various activities designed to strengthen team relationships.
The event also pays homage to Hawaii’s rich cultural history through its potluck lunch, reminiscent of the traditional “Hawaii Plate Lunch” that originated during the plantation era.
This initiative contributes to reef conservation, strengthens company bonds, and raises awareness about the importance of preserving Hawaii’s marine ecosystems.
The tournament’s success demonstrates TMG’s commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. As the event grows in popularity, TMG hopes to continue and expand this tradition, encouraging broader community involvement in protecting the reefs.
The company invites other organizations and community members to join in their efforts, emphasizing that everyone can play a role in preserving Hawaii’s natural beauty for future generations.
